Venerable Euthymius Archimandrite of Suzdal, the Wonderworker

Commemorated: April 14 (April 1, Old Style)

Life

Euthymius was born in Nizhny Novgorod and, hearing the Gospel words about taking up one's cross, became a monk at the Caves monastery there under Abbot Dionysius. When Prince Boris Konstantinovich of Suzdal and Nizhny Novgorod asked for a builder for a monastery, Dionysius sent him. Euthymius first founded a community near Gorokhovets, then in Suzdal laid the foundation of the Monastery of the Saviour in the presence of Bishop John.

The main church was finished and consecrated in 1352, and Euthymius was made archimandrite. For fifty-two years he led a community of some three hundred monks under a strict common rule, with no private property and silence at table. He visited Sergius of Radonezh for conversation and died on 1 April 1404. The monastery now bears his name.
