Venerable Euphrosene of Alexandria

Commemorated: October 8 (September 25, Old Style)

Life

According to her Life, Euphrosyne was the only daughter of a wealthy Alexandrian, Paphnutius, who had long been childless and had prayed for her birth. At eighteen, as her father was arranging her marriage, she visited a monastery with him and resolved to give up the world. She had her hair cut by a monk, dressed in men's clothes and entered a men's monastery under the name Smaragdus.

The Life tells that she lived there for thirty-eight years in a cell of her own, and that her father, looking for her in vain, was comforted by the abbot without knowing who the monk was. When she was dying, she revealed who she was. Her father then spent ten years in her cell. She is dated to the fifth century.
