Venerable Erasmus of the Kiev Caves

Commemorated: March 8 (February 24, Old Style)

Life

Erasmus was a wealthy monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery in the 12th century who spent his whole fortune on its church, covering many icons with gold and silver. Once he had become poor, the others paid him little attention, and he began to think he had wasted his wealth and should have given it to the poor. He fell into despair and neglected his monastic life, then fell gravely ill and lay for seven days unable to speak.

His Life tells that on the eighth day he sat up and told the brethren he had seen Antony and Theodosius and the Mother of God, who said that because he had adorned her church she would take him in three days. He confessed his sins before all, received the schema, and died on the third day, c. 1160.
