Venerable Demetrius, Wonderworker of Priluki and Vologda

Commemorated: February 24 (February 11, Old Style)

Life

Demetrius came from Pereslavl-Zalessky and took monastic vows there at the Nagorny monastery of Saints Boris and Gleb, later becoming a priest. He often visited St Sergius of Radonezh, who had founded the Trinity monastery, to talk with him about how to run a monastery with a common life. Demetrius built a church of St Nicholas on the shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo at Pereslavl and became abbot of the community that gathered there, giving it a strict common rule.

To escape fame, he left for Vologda and chose a quiet spot at a bend ('luka') of the Vologda river, where he founded the Saviour monastery of Priluki. Many of his disciples followed him there from Pereslavl. He died on 11 February 1392.
