Venerable Basil the Confessor, Bishop of Parium

Commemorated: April 25 (April 12, Old Style)

Life

Basil was bishop of Parium, an old city on the Hellespont in Mysia, chosen for his upright life. When the Iconoclast movement arose in the eighth century, he refused all fellowship with its supporters, would not allow them to act in his diocese and, despite pressure, would not sign the written decree for the destruction of icons.

For this he was harassed and insulted, and as his Life says, like Paul he spent his days in hardship and constant moves from place to place. He avoided the Iconoclast councils, and died in peace some time after 754.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
