Venerable Anthony of Dymi Lake, Novgorod
Commemorated: January 30 (January 17, Old Style)
Life
Anthony of Dymi is remembered as a monk of Novgorod who founded a monastery in the forests near Tikhvin, on the shore of Lake Dymi. Monastery tradition says that he was a disciple of Varlaam of Khutyn and left the Khutyn monastery after being chosen its abbot. The dates of his life differ: the tradition gives 1224 for his death, a reference work 1273. The monastery, according to tradition, was burned in 1409 by the army of the emir Edigei; the monks buried the relics and sank the bells in the lake. It was closed in 1919.
