The Holy Glorious and All-Praised Leaders of the Apostles, Peter and Paul
Commemorated: July 12 (June 29, Old Style)
Life
Peter, a fisherman from Bethsaida in Galilee, and Paul, a Pharisee from Tarsus, were among the leaders of the first Christian communities. According to old tradition both came to Rome and died there under the emperor Nero, around 64–67. Peter was crucified, and the tradition adds that he asked to be crucified head down. Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded. Both are remembered on 29 June, a date recorded at Rome by the middle of the third century.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
