St. Triphyllius, Bishop of Leucosia (Nicosia) in Cyprus
Commemorated: June 26 (June 13, Old Style)
Life
Triphyllius was born in Constantinople and studied law and letters at Berytus (Beirut). He became the disciple of Spyridon of Trimythous and, in the time of Constantius II, bishop of Leucosia (today's Nicosia) in Cyprus. His Life tells that once, walking with Spyridon past the vineyards of Parimna, he wished he owned one, and Spyridon, reading his thought, turned him to treasures that do not pass.
The historian Sozomen tells that when Triphyllius, a polished speaker, preached to a council of Cypriot bishops and replaced the plain Gospel word «bed» with a more elegant one, Spyridon asked whether he was better than the One who had said «bed», and walked out of the church. Triphyllius died c. 370.
