St. Theophylactus the Bishop of Nicomedia

Commemorated: March 21 (March 8, Old Style)

Life

Theophylact came to Constantinople from the East and became a friend of Tarasius, then a high official at court. When Tarasius became patriarch and convened the Second Council of Nicaea (787), which restored the veneration of icons, Theophylact became a monk, and Tarasius later made him bishop of Nicomedia. There he built churches, hospitals and hostels, and himself washed the sick and lepers in the city's almshouses.

In 815 he went with Patriarch Nicephorus and other bishops to the Iconoclast emperor Leo V the Armenian, and warned him to his face of a sudden end. He was exiled to Strobilos on the coast of Asia Minor, where he lived some thirty years and died c. 842–845. His relics were brought back to Nicomedia after icons were restored.
