St. Metrophanes the first Patriarch of Constantinople

Commemorated: June 17 (June 4, Old Style)

Life

Metrophanes lived in the time of Constantine the Great. His Life says he was the son of Dometius, a Roman of imperial family who became a Christian and settled in Byzantium, where he and then his elder son Probus became bishop. Metrophanes was bishop when Constantine refounded Byzantium as his new capital, so the Church counts him the first bishop, and later the first patriarch, of Constantinople.

Too old and frail to travel to the Council of Nicaea in 325, he sent his chorepiscopus Alexander in his place. According to his Life, when the bishops of the council visited him on his deathbed, he named Alexander as his successor. He died c. 326, at a great age; his Life gives 117 years.
