St. Isaiah the Bishop and Wonderworker of Rostov
Commemorated: May 28 (May 15, Old Style)
Life
Isaiah was a monk of the Kiev Caves monastery in the time of St Theodosius. In 1062 Grand Prince Iziaslav made him abbot of the monastery of St Demetrius in Kiev, and about 1077 he became bishop of Rostov, in the north-east of Rus, where many people still kept to the old pagan ways. He travelled through his diocese preaching and building churches.
In 1089 he took part in the consecration of the great stone church of the Dormition at the Kiev Caves monastery. He died on 15 May 1090. His relics were found in Rostov in the twelfth century, and he is venerated as a wonderworker of Rostov.
