St. Ignatius the Bishop and Wonderworker of Rostov
Commemorated: June 10 (May 28, Old Style)
Life
Ignatius became a monk, then archimandrite and then bishop of Rostov, in the north-east of Rus. He led the diocese for twenty-six years during a hard time, under the Tatar domination that began with the invasion of 1237-1240. He died on Friday, 28 May 1288, after vespers.
His Life tells that the whole town gathered at his body and wept for a shepherd who had helped widows, orphans and the poor and had advised princes and nobles. It also tells that two nuns saw him rise from his coffin in his vestments, bless the people and enter the burial place prepared for him.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
