St. Eumenius, Bishop of Gortyna
Commemorated: October 1 (September 18, Old Style)
Life
Eumenius was bishop of Gortyna on Crete in the seventh century. According to his Life, he gave away all his property to the poor while still young and was chosen bishop for his way of life. He is remembered as generous to orphans and the sick.
His Life tells that he killed a large serpent by prayer, travelled to Rome and then to the Thebaid in Egypt, where, during a drought, he is said to have prayed for rain. He died in the Thebaid, and his body was brought back to Gortyna and buried there.
