Saints Sergius and Herman, the Wonderworkers of Valaam

Commemorated: July 11 (June 28, Old Style)

Life

Sergius and Herman are named by tradition as the founders of Valaam Monastery, on an island in Lake Ladoga. The old Lives place their deaths around 1353, but there are no medieval documents to confirm this, and scholars date the monastery's beginnings anywhere from the Middle Ages' earliest centuries to the fourteenth. Their origin is also disputed: some sources call them Greek, others Karelian. They became the monastery's patrons, and their relics were kept at Valaam.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); Wikipedia (to check the facts).
