Saint Tikhon, Bishop of Amathus
Commemorated: June 29 (June 16, Old Style)
Life
Tikhon was born at Amathus in Cyprus, the son of a baker. His Life tells that as a boy he gave the bread he was sent to sell to the poor, saying he had lent it to God, and that his father then found his empty granary full of wheat. He became a reader and deacon, and when Bishop Memnon died, the Christians of Amathus chose him as their bishop; he was consecrated by Epiphanius of Salamis.
Many in Amathus were still pagans, and Tikhon worked to bring them to Christianity and pulled down the shrines around the city. Tradition says he planted cast-off dry vine cuttings that took root and ripened early. He died in old age in 425.
