Saint Proclos, Archbishop of Constantinople

Commemorated: December 3 (November 20, Old Style)

Life

Proclus was born in Constantinople and, as a young man, served as reader and secretary to Patriarch Atticus. He was a pupil of John Chrysostom, and the Life that Rostov retells tells that, waiting at the door, he saw the Apostle Paul speaking with Chrysostom. Proclus later became archbishop of Constantinople (434–446/447).

He was known as a preacher. Before he became patriarch he preached a famous sermon on the Mother of God in the presence of Nestorius in 429. As archbishop, he arranged the return of the remains of John Chrysostom from exile to Constantinople in 438, with the emperor Theodosius II. He kept the peace in a city troubled by theological quarrels, and died around 446–447.
