Saint Gregory the Wonderworker, Bishop of Neo-Cæsarea
Commemorated: November 30 (November 17, Old Style)
Life
Gregory was born at Neocaesarea in Pontus into a pagan family. He studied law and philosophy and became a Christian; after studies in Alexandria and Palestine he became a pupil of Origen. About 240 Bishop Phaedimus of Amasia consecrated him bishop of his home town. His Life tells that at the time Christians there numbered seventeen.
According to his Life, during a vision the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist gave him a statement of faith about the Trinity, which Neocaesarea long kept in writing. The city became largely Christian under his care, and his reputation for miracles gave him the name Wonderworker. He took part in a council at Antioch against Paul of Samosata and died around 266–270.
