Repose of St Eustathius I, Archbishop of Serbia
Commemorated: January 17 (January 4, Old Style)
Life
Eustathius came from Budimlja in Serbia and became a monk in the monastery of the Archangel Michael in Zeta. He went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem and then settled on Mount Athos in Hilandar, the Serbian monastery founded by Simeon Nemanja and Saint Sava, where he was chosen abbot. He became bishop of Zeta and then archbishop of Serbia, a successor of Saint Sava.
His Life tells that he gave the wealth of his see to poor churches, widows and orphans. After about seven years as archbishop he fell ill and died at Žiča, c. 1285, saying farewell to the bishops and monks at his bed. He was buried there in a marble tomb he had prepared himself; later his relics were taken to Peć for safety.
