Repose of Saint Theodosius, Archbishop of Chernigov
Commemorated: February 18 (February 5, Old Style)
Life
Theodosius came from the Uglitsky family of Left-Bank Ukraine; his father Nikita was a priest. He studied at the Kiev Brotherhood school and took monastic vows at the Kiev Caves Lavra, receiving the name of its founder, St Theodosius. Around 1661 he became abbot of the Korsun monastery and later of the Vydubychi monastery in Kiev, where he restored the discipline of the brethren and set up a skete for monks who sought stricter solitude.
Called to Chernigov, he made the poor Yelets monastery prosperous within a few years, and in 1692 he became Archbishop of Chernigov. He died on 5 February 1696. He was glorified in 1896, and about 150,000 people came to Chernigov for the opening of his relics.
