Prophet Jeremiah

Commemorated: May 14 (May 1, Old Style)

Life

Jeremiah was born into a priestly family at Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin, and was called to prophesy while still young; he answered that he was only a boy and did not know how to speak. He preached in Jerusalem for some forty years, under Kings Josiah, Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, in the late seventh and early sixth centuries BC, warning that the city would fall to Babylon.

He was beaten, imprisoned and once let down on ropes into a cistern full of mud, from which the Ethiopian court official Ebed-melech pulled him out. After Jerusalem was destroyed, fugitives took him to Egypt. Tradition holds that his own countrymen stoned him there, at Tahpanhes.
