Prophet Haggai
Commemorated: December 29 (December 16, Old Style)
Life
Haggai is the tenth of the Minor Prophets and the first prophet after the return from exile in Babylon. His four short speeches are precisely dated to the second year of the Persian king Darius I, between August and December 520 BC.
He urged the governor Zerubbabel, the high priest Joshua and the people of Jerusalem to stop living in their own “paneled houses” (1:4) while the Temple lay in ruins, and work on the Second Temple began soon after. He worked alongside the prophet Zechariah, and the Temple was completed in 515 BC.
