Prophet Ezekiel
Commemorated: August 3 (July 21, Old Style)
Life
Ezekiel was a priest, the son of Buzi, who was taken to Babylon in 597 BC with King Jehoiachin and the first group of exiles from Jerusalem. He lived at Tel Abib by the river Chebar and received his call as a prophet there in 593 BC. His book records his messages to the exiles over some twenty years, before and after the fall of Jerusalem in 586.
The book is known for its visions: the chariot-throne of God, the scroll he is told to eat, the valley of dry bones and the new Temple. It also records that he did not mourn when his wife died, as a sign to the exiles of the loss of the Temple (Ezekiel 24).
