New Martyrs Seraphim and Theognostus

Commemorated: August 11 (July 29, Old Style)

Life

Seraphim (Bogoslovsky) and Theognost (Pivovarov) were hieromonks, monks who were priests, from the Glinsk Hermitage in Russia. Early in the twentieth century they were transferred to the Holy Trinity monastery at Issyk-Kul in Central Asia; Seraphim was ordained priest at Verny, now Almaty, in 1909.

After the revolution they set up a small hermitage in the mountains near Verny. In 1921 Red Army soldiers killed both there. The Russian Church glorified them locally in 1993 and for the whole Church in 2000.
