New Hieromartyr Dmitry, archbishop of Mozhaisk and those with him

Commemorated: October 21 (October 8, Old Style)

Life

Dmitry (Ivan Dobroserdov), born in 1865 in Tambov province, was a village priest and then a teacher of religion at a Moscow gymnasium. He became a monk in 1908 and in 1914 bishop of Mozhaisk. In the 1920s and 30s he was moved from see to see — Stavropol, Baku, Pyatigorsk, Kostroma, Kaluga — and returned to Mozhaisk in 1934.

Arrested in September 1937 and accused of anti-Soviet agitation, he did not admit guilt. He was shot on 21 October 1937 at the Butovo firing range near Moscow during the Great Terror. Remembered with him are a deacon, two monks, a nun and three lay people who died in the same wave of executions.
