Martyrs Timothy and Maura of Antinoe in Egypt

Commemorated: May 16 (May 3, Old Style)

Life

Timothy, a young reader of the church from the village of Perapa in the Thebaid of Egypt, had been married to Maura for only twenty days when he was arrested in Diocletian's persecution, c. 286. The governor Arrian ordered him to sacrifice and to hand over his books. According to their Passion he refused, saying that no one gives his children up to death, and the books he had copied were his children.

Maura, sent to persuade her husband, declared herself a Christian as well. After torture both were crucified facing each other, and the account tells that they lived on the crosses for nine days, encouraging each other, before they died.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
