Martyrs Thallelæus, Alexander and Asterius
Commemorated: June 2 (May 20, Old Style)
Life
Thalelaeus, a young physician from Lebanon who treated the sick without payment, was arrested at about eighteen during the persecution under Emperor Numerian and brought before the governor in Aegae in Cilicia. His Life tells that the two executioners ordered to hang him, Alexander and Asterius, declared themselves Christians and were beheaded at once. It tells too that Thalelaeus survived being thrown into the sea and exposed to wild beasts, and was finally killed with the sword, about 284. The Roman Martyrology also records Thalelaeus, Alexander and Asterius on this day.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
