Martyrs Proclus and Hilarion

Commemorated: July 25 (July 12, Old Style)

Life

Proclus and Hilarion were a man and his nephew from the district of Calyptus near Ancyra in Galatia. According to the Passion, Proclus was arrested under Trajan and brought before the governor Maximus, who ordered him hung on a tree and torn with iron hooks. The account tells that on the road the governor’s chariot stood immovable until he wrote that the God of Proclus was the true God. After burning and torture, Proclus was fastened to a tree and shot with arrows on 12 July. His nephew Hilarion, who met the soldiers leading him and declared himself a Christian, was beaten and beheaded three days later. Believers buried them together.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
