Martyrs Probos, Tarachos and Andronicus, at Tarsus in Cilicia

Commemorated: October 25 (October 12, Old Style)

Life

Tarachus, Probus and Andronicus were arrested at Pompeiopolis in Cilicia under Diocletian and taken before the governor Numerius Maximus at Tarsus. Tarachus was a former soldier aged sixty-five, Probus came from Side in Pamphylia, and Andronicus was a young man of good family from Ephesus.

Their Acts, which take the form of court records of three interrogations, are among the best-known accounts of the Great Persecution. After long tortures they were sent to the amphitheatre of Anazarbus, where, according to the Acts, the beasts would not touch them; they were then killed by gladiators with the sword, in 304.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
