Martyrs Onisiphorus and Porphyrius of Ephesus
Commemorated: November 22 (November 9, Old Style)
Life
Onesiphorus and Porphyrius suffered in the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, in the years c. 284–305. According to their Life, they were beaten over their whole bodies and tortured in many ways, then laid on long iron pans over a fire, and finally tied to wild horses and dragged over stony ground until their bodies were torn apart.
Believers gathered the remains by night and buried them honourably in the village of Pangian. Healings were later said to take place at the grave.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
