Martyrs Nazarius, Gervasius, Protasius and Celsius of Milan

Commemorated: October 27 (October 14, Old Style)

Life

Nazarius, Gervasius, Protasius and Celsus are martyrs of Milan. Bishop Ambrose found the bodies of Gervasius and Protasius in 386 and placed them in his new basilica; he described the discovery in a letter to his sister, and Augustine, then in Milan, recalls it in his Confessions. About ten years later Ambrose found the body of Nazarius in a garden outside the city, and with it that of the boy Celsus.

Later Passions tell that Nazarius was the son of a Christian named Perpetua, preached in Italy and Gaul with the boy Celsus, and that all four were put to death under Nero. Nothing certain is known of when they actually died.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
