Martyrs Minos, Hermogenes, and Eugraphos of Alexandria
Commemorated: December 23 (December 10, Old Style)
Life
According to their Life, Menas was a learned Athenian official whom the emperor sent to Alexandria to calm unrest in the city. He was secretly a Christian, and his speeches won many to the faith. Hermogenes, a senior official sent to try him, was converted himself, was baptized and, the Life says, was made bishop of Alexandria. Eugraphus, Menas’s secretary, shared their faith.
When the emperor came to Alexandria in person, he had Eugraphus killed on the spot, and Menas and Hermogenes were beheaded after torture. The Roman Martyrology places their martyrdom under Galerius Maximian; the Byzantine calendar dates it about 313.
