Martyrs Marcian and Martyrios, Notaries of Constantinople

Commemorated: November 7 (October 25, Old Style)

Life

Marcian and Martyrius were notaries (secretaries) of Paul, bishop of Constantinople, in the years when the Arian controversy divided the city; Marcian was a chanter and Martyrius a subdeacon. After Paul was deposed and exiled by Emperor Constantius II, the two remained loyal to the creed of Nicaea.

The Arian party under Macedonius, who had taken Paul's see, had them beheaded c. 355 near the Melantias gate of the city. Tradition holds that John Chrysostom later built a church over their tomb.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
