Martyrs Eustratios, Auxentios, Eugene, Mardarius and Orestes at Sebaste

Commemorated: December 26 (December 13, Old Style)

Life

Eustratius, Auxentius, Eugene, Mardarius and Orestes suffered in Lesser Armenia under Diocletian, early in the 4th century. According to their Life, Eustratius was a high official in the town of Arauraca; when Christians were brought before the governor Lysias, he declared himself one of them. Auxentius was a priest, Mardarius a townsman who followed them, and Eugene and Orestes were soldiers.

They were tortured at Arauraca and then taken to Sebaste, where Eustratius was thrown into a furnace and Orestes was laid on a red-hot iron bed. Their relics were later carried to Rome. A prayer attributed to Eustratius before his death is still read at the Saturday Midnight Office.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
