Martyrs Eudoxius, Zeno, Macarius and 1104 soldiers with them

Commemorated: September 19 (September 6, Old Style)

Life

Eudoxius was a senior army officer under Emperor Diocletian. When the persecution began he left his post and hid with his family, but soldiers sent by the governor of Melitene found him. According to his Life, he fed them at his home and then told them who he was; they offered to let him escape, but he went with them.

Before the governor he took off his military belt as a sign that he would not sacrifice, and many soldiers did the same: the calendar names Zeno, Macarius and 1104 soldiers with him, dated to 311–312. Eudoxius was tortured and beheaded; Zeno, who wept for him, declared himself a Christian and was executed first. His wife, Basilissa, buried him and was released; his steward Macarius soon gave himself up and was beheaded.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
