Martyrs Dada, Maximus and Quinctilian
Commemorated: May 11 (April 28, Old Style)
Life
Maximus, Dada and Quintilian were Christians of the lower Danube who, in the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian, were arrested at prayer in the village of Ozovia and taken in chains to Dorostol. There the governors Tarquinius and Gavinius ordered all subjects to sacrifice to the gods, then offered the three their lives if they would become priests of the Mother of the gods.
Maximus, a reader of the church, answered for them that Christ alone is the heavenly king, and Dada and Quintilian agreed with him. The surviving account of the trial breaks off here. The Roman Martyrology of 1916 records their martyrdom under Diocletian, dated 286 in the Church's calendar.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
