Martyrs Carpos, Papilus, Agathodoros and Agathonica, at Pergamun

Commemorated: October 26 (October 13, Old Style)

Life

Carpus, bishop of Thyatira, Papylus, a deacon, his sister Agathonica and their servant Agathodorus were martyred at Pergamum in Asia Minor. Their Acts, among the oldest that survive, record the interrogation before the proconsul: Papylus told him he had children in God in every province and city.

In the oldest Greek text Carpus and Papylus are burned at the stake, and Agathonica, seeing them, goes into the fire herself; the later version used by the Rostov Lives says they were beheaded. The church calendar dates them to 251 under Decius, while Eusebius places them under Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd century, as does the Roman Martyrology.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
