Martyrs Agathonicus of Nicomedia and his companions: Zotikos, Theoprepios, Acyndinos, Severian, Zeno and others who suffered under Maximian

Commemorated: September 4 (August 22, Old Style)

Life

Agathonicus was a Christian of Nicomedia under Emperor Maximian who, according to his Life, turned many pagans away from the idols. Count Eutolmius, sent to hunt down Christians in Pontus, arrested Zoticus and his disciples at Carpe and, back in Nicomedia, Agathonicus and others, among them Theoprepius, Acindynus and Severian. The prisoners were marched towards Thrace, where the emperor was: Zoticus, Theoprepius and Acindynus, too wounded to walk, were killed on the road, Severian near Chalcedon. Agathonicus and the rest were tortured in Byzantium and beheaded at Selymbria, c. 305–311.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
