Martyr Platon of Ancyra

Commemorated: December 1 (November 18, Old Style)

Life

Plato was born at Ancyra in Galatia to Christian parents and was the brother of the martyr Antiochus. In the persecution of Diocletian (the year given is 302 or 306), he was brought before the governor Agrippinus. He declared that he was a servant of Christ and refused to sacrifice at the temple of Zeus.

The governor had him beaten by twelve soldiers in turn, jailed, then laid on a bronze bed over burning coals and later tortured with red-hot iron discs. His Life says that his body was found unharmed after hours on the bed. Strips of his skin were then cut away. At last he was beheaded.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
