Martyr Paramon and 370 Martyrs in Bithynia
Commemorated: December 12 (November 29, Old Style)
Life
Paramon is remembered with 370 Christians who were put to death in the persecution of the emperor Decius, around 250. According to the account, the governor Aquilinus, on his way to the warm springs of Valsaita, brought the 370 prisoners with him and tried to make them sacrifice at a temple of Poseidon. They refused, though he tried both kindness and threats.
A Christian called Paramon, who happened to pass by, called out in public that the governor was killing many innocent people for refusing to worship dumb idols. The governor sent his servants after him. They caught up with Paramon on the road, cut out his tongue, wounded him and killed him with spears. In the same hour the 370 prisoners were put to the sword in front of the temple.
