Martyr Lupus, the slave of St Demetrius of Thessalonica

Commemorated: September 5 (August 23, Old Style), November 8 (October 26, Old Style)

Life

Lupus was a slave, of whose life two traditions are told. The Greek calendar remembers him as the servant of the martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica, who after his master's death, c. 306, kept his bloodstained cloak and ring, smashed idols and was beheaded under Emperor Maximian. The Life retold by St Dimitry places him under Aurelian and says that he broke the pagan idols, that the crowd who came at him with swords and arrows could not wound him, and that he then gave himself up to the governor and was beheaded.
