Martyr Julian of Tarsus, in Cilicia

Commemorated: July 4 (June 21, Old Style)

Life

Julian was born in Anazarbus in Cilicia, the son of a pagan senator and a Christian mother, who after her husband's death moved to Tarsus and had the boy baptized. When he was eighteen, the persecution of Diocletian began, and the governor Marcian arrested him. His Life tells that he was taken through the cities of Cilicia for a year, tortured at each, and kept his faith. His mother, who followed him everywhere, was also put to death. Julian was sewn into a sack and thrown into the sea, about 300. The waves carried his body ashore, and his relics were later brought to Antioch, where John Chrysostom spoke in his honour.
