Martyr Irenarchus and with him 7 Womenmartyrs at Sebaste
Commemorated: December 11 (November 28, Old Style)
Life
Irenarchus came from Sebaste in Armenia. As a young man he worked as an executioner during the persecution of Diocletian, under the governor Maximian. While he was carrying out the tortures of seven women who were being punished for being Christians, he saw how they endured them, and he declared that he was a Christian himself.
The governor had him thrown into a swamp, according to the Life without result, then into a furnace, from which he is said to have come out unharmed. He was then beheaded, in 303 according to Rostov's account. The seven women are remembered with him.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
