Martyr Eusignios of Antioch

Commemorated: August 18 (August 5, Old Style)

Life

Eusignius was a soldier of Antioch who, according to his Life, served for sixty years under Diocletian, Constantine the Great and his sons, and was with Constantine when he saw the sign of the Cross in the sky. Retired and very old, he lived in prayer in Antioch. When Julian the Apostate came to the city in 362, Eusignius was asked to settle a quarrel between two pagans; the loser denounced him as a Christian. Brought before Julian, he reproached the emperor for abandoning the faith of Constantine, and Julian had him beheaded. He was, the sources say, 110 years old.
