Martyr Drosis the Daughter of the Emperor Trajan

Commemorated: April 4 (March 22, Old Style)

Life

According to her Passion, Drosis was a daughter of the emperor Trajan (98–117). At the time, five Christian women who led a group of consecrated virgins secretly gathered and buried the bodies of executed martyrs. One night Drosis, not yet baptized, slipped out to join them. Soldiers set to watch the bodies caught them all.

Trajan had the five women burned in molten bronze and kept his daughter under guard. When he later ordered furnaces lit for any Christians who would not sacrifice, Drosis escaped, anointed herself with myrrh and baptized herself in a stream. After seven days hidden among Christians she gave herself to the fire, early in the 2nd century.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
