Martyr Dometios of Persia and his two Disciples
Commemorated: August 20 (August 7, Old Style)
Life
Dometius was a Persian who became a Christian and, leaving his family, went to Nisibis on the Roman frontier, where he was baptized and became a monk. Disliked by some of the brethren, he moved to the monastery of Sergius and Bacchus at Theodosiopolis, whose abbot Nurvel, the Life says, ate nothing cooked for sixty years and slept standing. Nurvel made him a deacon, but when the abbot wanted him ordained priest, Dometius left for a mountain and lived in a cave, where many came to him. When Julian the Apostate passed through the region in 363, he ordered him stoned; soldiers found him singing the hours with two disciples and killed all three.
