Martyr Christina of Tyre

Commemorated: August 6 (July 24, Old Style)

Life

Christina was, according to her Passion, the daughter of Urban, a pagan official at Tyre in Phoenicia, who kept her in a high tower with golden and silver idols to venerate. Instead she came to believe in one God, broke the idols and threw the pieces out of the window to the poor. Her angry father had her beaten, and when she would not yield, it is said that three successive judges had her tortured. The account tells that she was thrown into a furnace for five days and came out unharmed, and that snakes sent against her did not hurt her.

In the end she was pierced with spears. She is remembered c. 300; the Passion is a later account with legendary features.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
