Orthodox · † 1318
Holy Right-believing Prince Michael of Tver
Commemorated: December 5 (November 22, Old Style)
Life
Michael Yaroslavich was prince of Tver from 1285 and in 1304 became grand prince of Vladimir, ruling from Tver. He struggled for the grand princely title with Yuri of Moscow, who had the support of the Mongol governor Kavgadyi. In December 1317 Michael defeated their army at Bortenevo; Yuri's wife, a sister of Khan Uzbek, was captured and died at Tver.
Yuri slandered Michael to Khan Uzbek. Summoned to the Horde in 1318, Michael was tried there. According to tradition, he refused to take part in pagan rites. He was killed at the Horde on 22 November 1318. His body was taken to Moscow and later brought to Tver, and he was canonized in 1549.
