Holy Prophet Hosea

Commemorated: October 30 (October 17, Old Style)

Life

Hosea, son of Beeri, is the first of the twelve Minor Prophets and the only writing prophet from the northern kingdom of Israel. He preached in the 8th century BC, from the last years of King Jeroboam II until shortly before the fall of Samaria to Assyria in 722.

At the heart of his book is his own marriage to an unfaithful wife, Gomer, which he took as an image of Israel's unfaithfulness to God and of God's persistent love. The Gospel of Matthew applies his words “Out of Egypt I called my son” to Christ. Tradition holds that he died in old age and was buried in his own land.
