Holy Prophet Elisha

Commemorated: June 27 (June 14, Old Style)

Life

Elisha, son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah, was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen when Elijah threw his cloak over him; he slaughtered his oxen, fed the people and followed the prophet. When Elijah was taken up, Elisha received his mantle and asked for «a double portion» of his spirit.

For about sixty years, in the 9th century BC, he was a prophet in the kingdom of Israel, counselling and rebuking its kings from Jehoram to Joash. The Books of Kings tell of the deeds remembered of him: the widow's oil, the Shunammite's son, Naaman the Syrian cleansed in the Jordan. He died in old age and was buried in Samaria; Jesus recalled Naaman in his sermon at Nazareth.
