Holy Prophet and God-seer Moses
Commemorated: September 17 (September 4, Old Style)
Life
Moses is the central figure of the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. According to the Bible, he was born in Egypt to a Hebrew family, raised at Pharaoh's court, and fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian. At forty, in the Orthodox chronology, or later, he was called at the burning bush to bring the Israelites out of slavery.
He led them out of Egypt, gave them the law at Mount Sinai and oversaw the building of the tabernacle. For forty years he led them through the wilderness. He died aged 120 on Mount Nebo, in sight of the land of Canaan, which he did not enter. The Church's date of 1531 BC follows a traditional chronology; historians date the Exodus differently or, in many cases, cannot date it at all.
